- President's Address
Dear member,
Well, here we are again. The new season gets underway and I don’t know about you but even as an old git, the blood courses through the veins and the heart races a little at the prospect of what a new season holds for us all. But before I go any further, let me pause and wish you fun, enjoyment and every success in the season whether its whistling, touching, coaching, advising or/and administrating. This is my 40th season in rugby (yes I know, this is nothing compared to our dear GOs) and my sense of excitement for the Game remains undiminished. Having done a couple of games now, the ELVs are only a challenge to the memory and players seem to be absorbing them well. I had a nice run out at Ealing IIs v Leicester Lions II which followed the first team game. Simon McConnell did that game – handled it like an old pro – so good luck Simon in your first year on the panel!! The weekend before last I had the pleasure of Barnes v Bracknell. Like Ealing, I’ve never been there and its such fun to visit new clubs for the first time. These are two great clubs which demonstrate the strength of London rugby – and they really welcome and look after referees! Speaking of first times, I was at Eastbourne College last Saturday – what an impressive rugby venue. And please remember, if you haven’t got a game, go watch another referee and give them some help and support – I’ve seen two already this season. As always, your feedback and ideas are very much welcomed by me and the Management Committee.
Now to more serious matters – the annual dinner. Last year, we had around 130 for what was a brilliant evening (not my words) with an outstanding speaker in Geoff Miller and look what happened to him as a result?! This year, we have Ian Robertson, who is a noted raconteur (that means story teller Crouchie) and very amusing. So book now to avoid disappointment – Wednesday 26th November at the RAC Club. All are very welcome.
Have fun.
Tim
P.S You may be aware of a charity match in aid of injured British soldiers ‘Help for Heroes’ to be played at Twickenham this coming weekend. A referee has suggested to me that fellow members might wish to consider donating their match expenses to this worthy cause which is supported by many of England’s leading lights. Our very own Sean Davey is the referee for this game and has his own page to donate to should you so wish.
